Black Friday Violence is Seen Throughout the Nation

Shoppers eager to take advantage of Black Friday deals early Thanksgiving night left the holiday cheer at home. Several incidents of violence and theft occurred throughout the country Thursday night.

In Las Vegas, a shopper was shot by a suspect who attempted to steal a TV from him. The suspect brandished a gun, took possession of the TV, and tried to return to his vehicle. The victim followed the suspect and was shot in the leg while trying to recover his property.

In Chicago, a police office was dragged several feet by a car. An officer responding to a call of alleged shoplifting followed the suspect to his car when the car started to move as the officer was half inside it. A backup officer then shot the driver of the car.

Closer to home, at least three people got into a fight in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Rialto, California because shoppers were cutting in line. More than a dozen police officers swarmed the retail giant at the Wal-Mart on Riverside Ave after an officer was injured trying to break up a fight between two men.

All the people involved in the fights were taken into custody, but one of the men involved in the fight outside was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and felony assault on a peace officer. Police said he was allegedly kicking the other man in the head when he was on the ground.

Raymond Rice, 25, of San Bernardino and Chennel Smith, of Fontana, were arrested after the confrontation outside the store.

Teens Arrested for Robbery and Assault in Costa Mesa

Four Costa Mesa teenagers face serious charges after an atempting to shoplift from a Ralphs supermarket escalated quickly to a hostile confrontation with police and an attempt to remove an officer’s handgun.

The Costa Mesa Police Department received a report of “uncooperative, hostile” shoplifting suspects from a Ralphs supermarket on 17th Street Tuesday afternoon. Allegedly, three males and one female attempted to grab beer and run toward the exit. Store security captured one of the teenagers and held him in a secure office. Four accomplices later returned and attempted to break down the door.

The first responding police officer found a male and a female suspect physically fighting with the store’s loss-prevention personnel. While the officer was handcuffing one female assailant, a second female suspect approached the officer from behind and attempted to forcibly remove his handgun from his belt holster, police said.

Luckily, an off-duty female Orange County sheriff’s deputy, who happened to be in the store, assisted the police officer in physically restraining and handcuffing the second female suspect. The situation took a turn when the officer grabbed a nearby uncooperative male suspect. The male suspect then allegedly punched the officer in the face. The officer and a second arriving officer wrestled the suspect to the ground and detained him.

The four suspects were booked for attempting to forcibly steal liquor from the store, police said. Two Costa Mesa girls, ages 15 and 16, and two Costa Mesa boys, ages 14 and 15, were booked on various charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, resisting an officer, assaulting an officer and attempting to take an officer’s firearm. They were held without bail.
