O.C. Doctor Sentenced for Selling Illegal Prescriptions

The thought of a drug dealer usually brings to mind an image of a street dealer pushing drugs to young kids and adults. Today, that image now includes a licensed doctor distributing drugs from a coffeehouse venue.

An Orange County doctor who often saw patients at Starbucks coffeehouses has agreed to serve at least eight years in federal prison for illegally selling prescriptions for powerful painkillers and other drugs, according to court records.

Alvin Ming-Czech Yee, 44, of Mission Viejo routinely wrote prescriptions for highly abused medications to patients with no legitimate need for them, authorities have alleged in court papers.

Yee was arrested in October 2011 at his Irvine office and was released on bond. He was charged with 56 counts of illegally distributing a controlled substance and was accused of selling prescription for cash after cursory examinations often conducted in coffeehouses and other unusual locales.

At least one patient, a 21-year-old Huntington Beach woman, died of a drug overdose in August 2011 after he prescribed drugs for her, according to a preliminary finding by the Orange County coroner’s office, according to a federal search warrant affidavit. Authorities said Yee met up to a dozen people almost every evening in Starbucks throughout Orange County.

According to an agreement with prosecutors, Yee will plead guilty to seven counts of illegal distribution of a controlled substance by a practitioner and will agree to serve eight to 10 years in prison.

Three Arrested in Yorba Linda Burglaries

Over 100 burglaries have taken place in Yorba Linda since October 2012, and police believe they finally have the thieves. Thieves broke into 35 homes last month alone, stealing mainly jewelry and electronics. Authorities say most of the burglaries happened during the say between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Due to the increased number of burglaries, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department had taken over law-enforcement duties in Yorba Linda, leading to an increase in patrols.  On Friday, authorities arrested Howard Arca, 36; Don Nguyen, 32; and Vu Doan, 21, in the East Lake Village area of Yorba Linda.

Neighborhood residents reported suspicious activity, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Residents said three men were knocking on doors in the neighborhood. If residents answered, the men asked for someone who did not live at the residence.

Sheriff’s deputies located the three men sitting in two cars in the area. Their stories were found to be inconsistent and after searching the cars, deputies found crowbars, gloves and screwdrivers. The three men are believed to be part of a larger burglary ring responsible for more than 100 area burglaries.
